TCV Service Awards

At Nature Votes 2020, TCV was pleased to present Lifetime Achievement awards to Melinda Welton and John Noel for their unwavering commitment to protecting Tennessee's environment.

Melinda Welton

Melinda graduated from the University of Connecticut in zoology as an ornithologist. She is a well-known bird biologist whose work provided the science for the preservation of some 70,000 acres of bio-diverse lands in the Cumberland Mountains. Her work with the Cerulean Warbler, a species of high conservation concern, has taken her across Tennessee and to many remote areas in Central America. Her passion is to enhance our understanding of birds their biology, and to share her enthusiasm to inspire new birdwatchers to appreciate birds and inspire them to be active in conserving their habitats. Melinda has earned the Distinguished Service Award from the TN Ornithological Society for her many leadership roles at the state and local levels.

She has done extensive field work to survey a number of species that have helped save breeding areas for many! And she currently chairs TennGreen’s Conservation Committee using her biological background to benefit the lands conserved.

John Noel

John is a business leader, preservationist and CEO of John Noel Investment Real Estate Co. He is immediate past president of the board of TennGreen and an active advocate for the protection of Tennessee’s treasured places. At the forefront of many precedent-setting campaigns involving water quality and land conservation, his efforts have been featured in National Geographic Magazine. He has served on many boards, including Tennessee Conservation Voters, the Climate Institute in Washington D.C., and currently serves as President of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, an eight state regional organizations concerned with energy issues and climate change.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen presented him with a Governor’s Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award, Tennessee’s highest environmental accolade. He teamed up with the Governor to permanently protect over 70,000 acres of eco-rich Cumberland Mountains lands. A well-known speaker on climate issues, Noel champions energy conservation, renewal energy sources, open land and all things linked to a healthy life and planet.
